Biography

Adélia Clavien, from Miège (VS), was born in Portugal and has lived in Trélex, Switzerland, since 1981.

Although she spent a lot of time in the Valais artistic community, she took her first painting courses and started to photograph in St Gall, where she lived for 10 years. Curious and passionate, Adélia has been fascinated by Arts since she was young and has worked in the IT sector for over 20 years.

As an artist, she works in a self-taught and passionate way. She explores various painting techniques (acrylic, charcoal, sand, stained glass, etc.) and uses her knowledge of photography to create original paintings mixed with photography - New Pop Realism. The various themes presented allow us to travel to a colorful and mysterious universe - the universe of Adélia.

Adélia works in part-time to have more time for her artistic activities (photography, painting, music, dance). Self-taught, she is multitalented, speaks several languages, plays several musical instruments, feels comfortable with new technologies and is a naturally open person.

Technique

The mixmedia technique brings an extra dimension to her works of art, as it is full of elements, textures, details and allows her to explore the interactions between different media and graphic instruments.

The use of a mixed technique offers her immense possibilities for expression and allows her to personalize her artistic language. In painting, we speak of a mixed technique when the colored material contains at least two binders of a different nature or heterogeneous materials. In the history of pictorial technique, artists often mix materials to achieve their goals.

Her "mixed technique" paintings are compositions containing up to 10 overlapping and digitally processed photos. The base photo and several other overlaid photos end up creating the artistic side of the base photo.

The paintings in the exhibition were based on some famous people from the cinema and / or portraits of people around them. For the creation of artistic effects, she used (macro) photo details, such as: cracked walls, cracked houses, plant shadows, rusty objects, graffiti / urban, inscriptions, newspapers / readings, etc. etc. etc.

After editing, the digital image is printed on canvas. The canvas is then painted with different media, such as: Acrylic, Coal, Sand, Stained Glass, Plaster, Bitumen, etc.

All the paint is then covered with epoxy resin.

Comment

“Curiosity and Passion

Throughout history, we have always admired those who excel in their field, whether in science or in the arts. Einstein and Picasso have their names eternalized. But admiration increases when someone manages to stand out in various fields of knowledge, becoming the very definition of the term "polymath". And we remember da Vinci, who with his Renaissance universality achieved the feat of standing out in both the Arts and Science.

This versatility is found in Adélia Clavien, a visual artist born in Portugal and based in Switzerland. Although fascinated by art from an early age, she has been dedicated to computer science for many years. For someone who speaks several languages and plays several musical instruments, it would be impossible to limit this plurality. And she has sought to dedicate her time due to her artistic side: Music, Dance and Photography. In addition, of course, to Painting where she went through the Abstract and currently navigates the Figurative, in what can be called Pop Neorealism.

Curiosity is characteristic of creative people. Adélia managed to unite the world of Information Technology to Art, Photography to the computer and to Painting. An excellent photographer, she works with digital composition of photos in several layers and as a modern alchemist, she uses different materials in her work, such as sand, coal, bitumen, acrylic, resin, among others, which combines with photos printed on canvas.

Adélia has successfully participated in a series of international exhibitions. From Rome to New York, from Singapore to Barcelona, from Lisbon to Geneva.

What stands out is the overlapping work, where Adélia connects unexpected elements, colors, texts, textures and presents a composition of the human being as she is, far beyond the simple physical appearance: elaborated, with many layers, many facets that reveal how we are. With our fears and sins, the words we say and those we keep silent. And so it reaches our heart, our soul.

Adélia Clavien rescues the fascination and complexity that make us unique. Revealing the essence of what we call "humanity". "
